Vans Skate Park - Orange, CA
The Block is the flag ship and first of several Vans Skate parks. The Block has been around for more than 10 years has hosted world renowned events such as The Vans Pro Tec Pool Party where heavy hitters such as Rune Glifberg, Omar Hassan, Chris Miller, Steve Caballero, and Bob Burnquist. So Vans decided it was time for a facelift to attract the same level of events for rest of the park. In April of 2008, Team Pain came in and completely re-designed and built the entire wood portion of the park. We knew Vans needed to be creatively put together with an overall design that would allow for continuous flow throughout the park. First the vert ramp was torn down and replaced with an 6ft. high by 80ft. wide mini ramp w/ a 7ft. extension and a 9ft. with pool coping and escalators on either side. We completely tore out all the old ramps and replaced them with more of a "skateable art" approach. The beginner sections is a little bit simpler with a wedge and quarter pipe on either end and in the middle are mini pyramid, roll over, mini rail and low ledges. The advanced area features a china bank with a corner next to wedge ramps one mellow, one steep. Main center stage has many levels and many obstacles such as step-up onto a banked manual with a flat bar on top, three handrails one on a bank, two down a set 4 and 8 set of stairs, step-up to rail and also many style ledges throughout the park. Slanted walls with coping, manual pads, quarter pipe that blends into wallride, a bank to bank that sends you into a swell hip. There is also a beginner mini ramp tucked away inside. The Block is layered with a smooth birch finish to give you a smooth ride.
