We’re going to take a look back to the very beginning when it all started for Tim Payne and Team Pain Skate Parks. The year was 1977 in South Orlando, Florida. Tim Payne was still in high school when he constructed his first backyard half pipe. (seen in the image above) Tim’s experience at the time was building 1/4 pipes. Having a vision for something more; Tim took things to the next level.
Being limited on supplies and armed with his imagination, tools, and wood working skills, Tim constructed his first backyard half pipe. The ramp had one layer of plywood using a broom stick for coping on one side and a closet dowel on the other; his first half pipe was complete.”We changed the height several times from just vert to one foot of vert. I tried using a jig saw to cut the transitions at first but it was too slow so I used a circular saw and that worked great”, Tim recalls. Being young high school kids with a love for skating and with skateboarding being banned in Central Florida, Tim and his friends took it upon themselves to build their own ramps and obstacles and from there the inspiration spread.
The image below is a half pipe that was constructed by Tim a couple years later in a friend’s backyard. Later the ramp was moved to a ditch in the woods and complete with a platform deck and a roll in feature. Within in a couple years ramps started popping up everywhere in the area.
You could say from there it was history, we hope you enjoyed a brief look back in time to when it all started for Team Pain and we look forward to the future as we continue to do our best to design and construct world class skate parks around the world.
