In 1978, the original Get-A-Way Skatepark, created by Atlanta professional skateboarder Bill Underwood, was a revolutionary design. Underwood dreamed of a skate park that offered features challenging to skaters of any style and skill level. His design made Huntsville a model for future skate park environments. In January 2021, the Huntsville City Council approved a resolution to enter into an agreement between the City of Huntsville and Friends of Huntsville Parks & Recreation for the construction of a new Skate Park at John Hunt Park. Team Pain was contacted by Friends of Huntsville to develop a new, modern skate park while paying homage to the original unique design. To get an understanding of what the local riders desired in the park, Team Pain kicked off the project by holding 2 public input meetings. Once a majority consensus was reached, the concept began to take shape. Outdoor Solutions was brought in as the GC for the entire project, while Team Pain focused on the skate park. The park features 6 different areas to include a large street plaza course containing various handrails, benches, manual pads, flat bars and a “Rainbow Rail”, spine feature with ledges and a China bank. There are 3 bowl areas that include a rare 3/4 pipe, large competition pool/bowl and an intermediate clover blow with a mix of metal coping as well as pool coping and tile. The 300 foot long snake run starts out mellow and dips down into a 6 foot level and ends into an 8 foot deep end. And finally, the “C-Run” starts out with a ditch style entrance that drops into a long C- shaped turn that ends with a clover style bowl, adding many challenges for all levels of users. This skate park contains all the elements any skate park enthusiast would desire. With the dream of one local skateboarder, this project became a reality and we are very honored to have been a part of this unique; one of a kind skate park project.
